Lively small town with an eventful history

The historic town of Isny, a small town steeped in history in the Allgäu region of Württemberg with just under 14,000 inhabitants, is picturesquely situated between the Adelegg, the foothills of the Alps and extensive moors. It embodies an impressive mixture of innovation, progress and openness. As a lively location, Isny strives to make its diverse cultural offerings and historical cultural assets accessible to a wide audience and make them an experience. This commitment has given rise to the web app for the town.Translated with DeepL.com (free version)

Challenge

A web app was to be created for the historic town of Isny im Allgäu, which makes the areas of culture, nature and history tangible for visitors to the town in a digital way.

Solution

We developed a web app that enriches a visit to the city with interactive image, text and sound information. Various tours can be created individually so that the app reaches a wide range of target groups.

Analog and interdisciplinary to the core objective

Our team started the project with a strategy workshop in Isny. An intensive on-site exploration of the town helped us to understand the spatial conditions and get to know the exciting history of the town. The core objective of the project was developed together in the workshop.

In an interdisciplinary team and together with the contacts from the city of Isny, we developed an initial LoFi prototype of the web app and a mood board for the user interface within five days. This design process was even presented in an interview for PAGE (issue 05.23) and made it into the cover story.

A digital homage to Otl Aicher

For the development of the digital city guide, we were particularly honored to build on Otl Aicher's visionary foundation. Aicher, who shaped the town of Isny in the 1970s with unforgettable pictorial symbols for its landmarks and a coherent corporate design, laid the foundation for a unique visual identity. With Aicher's unique handwriting as a guideline, we have now transferred this legacy into the digital realm.

The aesthetics of the design are characterized by minimalist black and white, which reflects Aicher's design ethos and contrasts with standard tourism advertising in German cities. A green “tour color” serves as a lively accent that blends harmoniously into the overall image. The entire design concept, from clear typography to basic geometric shapes, is based on the architecture of the exhibition buildings and follows established design guidelines - a homage to Aicher's principle of functional aesthetics.

Varied tours for every target group

With the digital city guide, visitors can experience the city of Isny in countless ways - suitable for every age group and every interest.

Editors have the freedom to create a wide variety of city tours: from entertaining children's tours to relaxed tours for senior citizens and detailed expeditions around the city of any length.

As soon as the user enters a tour, the aesthetics of the user interface change - a dark mode indicates that the user is now in tour mode and the navigation disappears.

Multimedia in all its facets

Each tour can be comprehensively enriched with multimedia content. This includes the integration of image and video material as well as individual audio recordings to make the city experience authentic and immediate for the user.

Interactive puzzles and playful challenges provide additional fun and actively involve the audience in the city experience. The web app is therefore also a great companion for the young target group.

The diverse options make it possible to make each tour unique and sustainable.

QR codes as the key to the web app

Access to the digital city guide is extremely easy and possible anywhere in Isny. By scanning strategically placed QR codes at places of interest and important points, users can access the web app immediately and directly. No matter where or in what context the guide is started, the basic structure and user guidance of the web app always remain the same. This uniformity ensures a consistent and intuitive user experience, regardless of the entry point or the specific content of the respective tour.

More than just a digital guide -
bringing the city to life digitally

The web app developed goes far beyond the functionality of a classic city guide. Thanks to the corresponding content maintenance, the entire town of Isny can be experienced digitally. In addition to the carefully curated and multimedia-enriched tours, the application offers users the opportunity to digitally capture the diversity of Isny in all its facets. From current events to curated restaurant recommendations - the web app acts as a central digital hub that makes the city a holistic experience and invites visitors and locals alike to explore it. It was important to us to actively involve local service providers. The vision is to make Isny's dynamic and diverse atmosphere digitally accessible in an innovative way, thus creating a seamless connection between the physical location and the digital experience.

Technical implementation

Thanks to the Neos CMS, the application has a flexible backend that offers editors simple but extensive options for creating content. At the same time, it also uses Vue.js in the front end to offer the digital experience of a native app.

Guided tours in and around the city can be easily created. Sights and other points of interest are also maintained centrally and can be linked as required.

When you start a tour, the integration of (Google) Maps helps you navigate from one point to the next.
