What it’s all about
Since it was founded in 1927, the Berchtesgadener Land dairy has followed the central tenets of sustainability. This cooperative society is fully owned by its farmers, who number around 1,700, and was also one of the first organic dairies in Bavaria. As an ambassador for fair and responsible trading, it is committed to being a guiding light in animal welfare and in the preservation of biodiversity. Format D has developed the company’s new online presence. This relaunch came hand in hand with a new design concept: it has been brought up to date but is still authentic to the brand, and this design has now been carried across to all of the digital channels.

We were overwhelmed by the experience and insights that we gained from our introduction to the company and our on-site visits. One thing was certainly clear: this wealth of experience needed to be made tangible for the visitors to the website as well. Therefore, right from the start, our top priority for the redesign was to transmit this huge amount of information, some of which was very complex, in a concise and clear way. For example, the parallax slider takes the user from the homepage straight into the world of the Berchtesgadener Land dairy, while giving them relevant information to help them along. An extensive product database, a recipe area and a login portal for distributors and farmers are also part of the site.
The INTERFACE DESIGN
The website is characterized by a strong visual and emotive design concept which builds on the bounty of insights into the countryside and trade that make the dairy cooperative so special. However, this is never overdone: the overall aesthetic is modern and minimalist, and the focus is on the atmosphere that is to be created for the user. Detailed illustrations drawn with loving care and short animation clips add to this sense of authenticity and give the website a playful edge in selected areas.
Der Loginbereich für die Landwirte der Molkerei Berchtesgadener Land wurde von uns konzeptionell überarbeitet. Mit eigener Menüstruktur und Dashboard hat nun jeder Landwirt strukturiert Einblick in die wichtigsten Themen.Der eigens für das Portal entwickelte Kleinanzeigenbereich bietet den Landwirten eine Plattform für das Suchen und Anbieten von gebrauchten Maschinen, Technik, Milchtanks und vieles mehr.Auch mit dem Bauernfahrzeug wurden nicht nur gestalterische Ziele für eine verbesserte Usability gesetzt, sondern auch eine Überarbeitung der Prozesse für Nutzer und Redakteure. Dies ermöglicht einen schnellen direkten Austausch im Netzwerk der Molkerei-Landwirte.
THE UNDERLYING TECHNOLOGY
Once more, Neos CMS, the innovative, modern content application framework, was used as the basis here, enabling the customer to manage content via front-end editing right down to the minute details. Of course, the customer can also produce entire new pages using this. It goes without saying that the templates are designed responsively so that cohesive aesthetics and function are ensured for all types of end devices. Conceptual revision of the product range structure was required for the complex product database with filters; in order to enable fast and reliable search and filtering results, we have put our faith in Elasticsearch.
Furthermore we used 2D WebGL renderer pixi.js for the parallax slider on the homepage and lottie.js for the SVG animations to implement the front end’s wow factor.
